Jim Goodwin made two changes to the Aberdeen team that concluded their Premier Sports Cup campaign with victory over Raith Rovers, as they fell to a 2-0 defeat to reigning champions Celtic in Glasgow on the opening day. Hayden Coulson made his Dons debut at left-back, replacing young Mason Hancock who has joined Arbroath on loan this season. There was a spot on the bench for new recruit Callum Roberts, who replaced Matty Kennedy after an hour. Liam Scales, on loan at the Dons, was ineligible to play his parent club, so sat out for Ross McCrorie to come into the back four. Dante Polvara stepped in for McCrorie in the middle of the park. Stephen Robinson handed six players their league debuts for St Mirren, as the Buddies fell to a 1-0 loss to the gaffer's former club, in defeat to manager-less Motherwell in their Scottish Premiership opener. Trevor Carson was between the sticks, as former Aberdeen defender Declan Gallagher slotted into the back three alongside Joe Shaughnessy and Charles Dunne. Ryan Strain was another league debutant at right wing-back. Scott Tanser was back at left wing-back. Meanwhile, Mark O'Hara and Keanu Baccus made their Buddies league bows in the middle of the park, with Jonah Ayunga being another as he partnered Alex Grieve in attack.
