Atletico Madrid were handed a tough draw in the Copa del Rey and they paid the price, continuing their poor record in the competition with a 2-0 defeat to Real Sociedad, putting in a very poor display. Atleti haven't defeated a Primera side in the Copa since they moved to the Wanda Metropolitano. Los Rojiblancos took on La Real on the back of a disappointing Spanish Super Cup display, bowing out at the semi-final stage with a defeat to Athletic Club in Riyadh. That followed a La Liga draw with Villarreal in which they enjoyed a much improved second half, struggling in the first. Atleti have lost four of their last eight La Liga games, and they need a response amid a crowded top four battle. Valencia picked up a big result last time out, drawing with title contenders Sevilla thanks to Goncalo Guedes' equaliser just before half time. The Sevilla clash followed a narrow Copa del Rey win over Atletico Baleares thanks to Marco Andre's goal in the first minute of the game, and before that, Jose Bordalas' men were thrashed by Real Madrid to make it back-to-back defeats following a defeat to Espanyol.
